The attempted coup d’ etat in Cyprus, sponsored by the Greek military junta, and the subsequent Turkish invasion of the island led to one of the most complex conflicts in international affairs. After 25 years of research, Alexis Papachelas sheds light upon some of the most burning questions in the sequence of historical events. The replacement of dictator Georgios Papadopoulos by Dimitrios Ioannidis in 1973; the role of prominent figures of the time such as Aristotelis Onassis; the discovery of oil in the Aegean Sea and the rising tension between Greece and Turkey in 1974; the role of the USA and the UK, and whether someone had given assurances to Ioannidis before the attempted coup. And it all culminated in the War Council of 20 July 1974. For the first time, the research brings to light the voices of Dimitrios Ioannidis and General Grigorios Bonanos, the Commander of the Greek Armed Forces, during the War Council. The 38 minutes that it lasted constitute an indispensable record for a full understanding of these momentous events. -NON FICTION- BEST SELLER

- 8 - October 2022 -FICTION- Andromache Father’s name: Danube The life of Greek-Romanian author Panait Istrati is not like a novel; it is a novel in itself. The hardships of childhood, the struggle for survival, travels and wanderings, strong friendships and successive loves, the quest for freedom—Istrati recounts all of this in his books with authenticity and the grace of an Eastern storyteller. He lived through the world-historical events of his time (the end of the Ottoman Empire, World War I), embraced the vision of a more just world (the October Revolution), and rubbed shoulders with the most important figures of his day (Romain Rolland, Maxim Gorky, Vladimir Mayakovsky, George Orwell), but more than anything else, he stood by the poor and the oppressed like no other. A name meaning fighter of men, or fighting like men. Andromache, Hector’s wife, is aptly named. After Achilles killed her husband, Neoptolemus killed her son by throwing him from the city walls and then took her back to Greece as a concubine, where she later gave birth to two of his sons. After Neoptolemus’ death, she married Helenus, Hector’s brother, and became Queen of Epirus. A life defined by men, good and bad alike. This is the tragic story of a woman, wife and queen, who stood on the ashes of Troy and found herself having to love what she should wholeheartedly despise. Kostas Akrivos was born in 1958. He worked as a teacher in secondary education. A highly acclaimed author, he has published novels, short stories and anthologies. His works have been translated into Italian, Dutch, Polish and German. Vice-ridden yet Godfearing, this repentant anti-hero will set his record straight once and for all. And God is his witness. The monologue of a woman who lived thirty years of her life moving between the safety of the same five bus stops: from home to work and back again. Emil Groman is appointed as the new manager of the island’s mines. The Prussian boss rushes to acquire wealth and power – a quest in which his son will also be involved a few years later. To achieve their goal, they will cooperate with Drakoulis, an ambitious interpreter who will become their pawn, as they grab the meager fortunes of the islanders either through terrorising them or making false promises. They will also reduce the security measures in the mines to a minimum, and humiliate local working men and women in every way. One day, however, Konstantis arrives on the island, with a burning desire for justice. The 20th century is dawning. In Europe, the youth die in the trenches of the First World War and in Serifos, they perish in the darkness of the mines. The collateral losses include Andromeda, the young wife of the now powerful mine owner Groman, as she sinks in grief and denies reality. However, a tragic event will serve as her emotional awakening and make her demand her life back. Meanwhile, the conditions at the mines reach an impasse and the workers go on strike to demand safety and dignity under the leadership of Spera and Perseus. Blood will be shed, comrades will be lost, but they will be unyielding until the final solution, as every life on the island continues to fight for love and justice – for their own place under the sun.
