Angelina knows it because she has grown up in the museum and she is talking and dancing with them. The statues are her best friends; since she has one and a half hand, she looks like those statues with missing limbs. Her only real, flesh-and-blood friend is Tiko who, despite being short sighted, can estimate the beauty of the small clay statues that decorate the roofs of their houses. It is the 28th of October 1940, when World War II starts for Greece. In the museum starts the grand operation to hide the statues in graves under the museum’s floors. When the two children finally find out about this secret operation, they help as much as they can despite their disabilities, while trying to hide and protect the statues in their neighborhood. Angeliki Darlasi offers a unique anti-war story about identity, friendship, resistance and kindness, which unfolds revealing a little-known part of the history – the heroic effort to hide and secure the statues of the National Archeological Museum during World War II. ABOUT THE BOOK It is 1922, the year of the Asia Minor Catastrophe. Drosos and his sister, Areti, arrive in Greece. The first chapter of their lives had come to a tragic end when they lost their parents and were forced to leave their country. The Municipal Theater of Athens offers accommodation to refugees. “It looks like a doll-house”, says Areti when she sees their new house; a loge among others full of refugees. However, Areti is not keen on dollhouses so she hides herself inside the trunk until one day she disappears… Drosos makes new friends among the refugees and they all try to find his sister. But is his sister a real person, is she alive, or is she his only way to endure pain? The truth will be revealed with the aid of Ariel, the spirit of the Shakespearean play “The Tempest” during an unforgettable performance, which will mark their lives from then on.
